NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DISAPPROVES SENATE AMENDMENT

MASERU — The National Assembly has on Tuesday disapproved amendment number 16, in which the Senate recommended that King Letsie III should be the Chairperson of the National Security Council.

The House disapproved when considering Senate amendments to Tenth Amendment to the Constitution Bill, 2024, where the Senate proposed that Clause 22 sub-clauses 148(2) (a) and (4), delete the words “Prime Minister” and substitute with the word “King”.

The Minister of Law and Justice Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi urged the House to disapprove as the amendment pulls the King in governance issues.

Makhaleng MP Mr. Mootsi Lehata supported the Minister, arguing that issues of security are sensitive and that the Prime Minister accounts to the nation thus can be withdrawn from power should anything go wrong but that would not be the case with the King as he leads the nation. . . .
