PRIMARY, SECONDARY EDUCATION SHOULD BE FREE- CHILDREN

Maseru, Apr. 16 — Children have strongly called for primary and secondary education to be free and compulsory.

This, they said at the Panel Discussion on the African Union (AU) theme of the Year of Education during the 43rd Ordinary Session of African Committee of Experts on the Rights of the Child (ACERWC) held in Maseru on Tuesday.

They said that most children drop out of school in particular secondary school due to the financial crisis as school fees and other educational requirements are expensive therefore calling on African Union (AU) member states this year which is earmarked as Year for Education to ensure that primary and secondary education is compulsory and free.

They said that this could increase the number of children in schools while at the same time decreasing the number of dropouts.
