Berea, June 5 — The Rural Self-Help Development Association (RSDA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition, hosted a dual-purpose chicken roadshow and cook-off in Teya-teyaneng on Friday, aimed at promoting dual-purpose chicken farming and raising awareness about its benefits.
Speaking during the event, District Agricultural Officer Mrs. ‘Malerato Lekhooa said a previous poultry disease outbreak affected many farmers, resulting in significant losses.
She noted that many farmers had overlooked indigenous Basotho chickens, which could have helped them sustain their poultry businesses during the outbreak.
Mrs. Lekhooa further highlighted the importance of dual-purpose chickens, saying they can play a significant role in improving household incomes and contributing to economic growth.
Highlighting the purpose of the event, RSDA Chief Executive Officer Mrs. ‘Mampho Thulo said the initiative is intended to promote dual-purpose chickens and educate people about their value.
She noted that the chicken skin is highly nutritious and contains important nutrients beneficial to the body.
Mrs. Thulo added that dual-purpose chickens are suitable for both egg and meat production, with hens providing eggs while cockerels are raised for meat.
She further emphasized that farmers can earn income through the sale of eggs, chicks, and chicken meat, making dual-purpose chicken farming a viable business opportunity.
Mrs. Thulo also explained that dual-purpose chicken can be prepared using various cooking methods, including grilling, as part of efforts to promote healthy and nutritious eating habits.
Meanwhile, Ms. Pulane Thulo from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) encouraged people to raise dual-purpose chickens, saying they contribute to better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life while ensuring that no one is left behind.
