SECTION 2 ON MINISTER NTSHAVHENI’S REMARKS

Maseru, Nov. 16 — SECTION 2 condemns the recent remarks by South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, regarding the illegal miners trapped underground in Stilfontein.

The organisation says the Minister’s statement that the government will “smoke them out” is not only irresponsible but also inhumane and callous, and also reflects a disregard for the lives of the miners, many of whom are Basotho, whose only crime is seeking a means for survival in a region that has left them with few options.

Motsamai Mokotjo indicated that while SECTION 2 firmly stands against Basotho engaging in illegal activities, including illegal mining across the South African border, it is essential to acknowledge the stark realities that push people into such desperate situations. . .
