SEHLABATHEBE NATIONAL PARK’S STRUGGLES LAID BARE AS GOVERNMENT TERMINATES OPERATOR’S CONTRACT

Qacha’s Nek, May.15 — Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Motlatsi Maqelepo, says poor contract management and lack of operator capacity have crippled Sehlabathebe National Park’s potential to contribute meaningfully to Lesotho’s tourism economy.

Speaking during a site visit with the Portfolio Committee on Natural Resources, Tourism and Land Cluster, Maqelepo revealed that May 15 marked the final day for the park’s current private operator, whose contract has now been terminated due to failure to meet key performance conditions.

“Reports I received from staff indicate that the operator lacked both the competence and the resources needed to run the park effectively.. .
