SERUMULA CLOSES DOWN

Maseru, May 29 — Lesotho’s premier choral music choir and academy, Serumula Performing Arts Academy closes down after 19 remarkable years of service, growth, music, creativity and cultural expression.

It ceases operations and closes down effective May 29, 2026 thus Serumula is no more.

According to the statement from the choir, this closure comes after several years of facing increasingly harsh economic conditions affecting the arts and creative industry, alongside severe financial challenges that have made it impossible for the academy to operate sustainably.

It indicates that this has been one of the most difficult decisions in the history of their organization.

“Despite our unwavering commitment to preserving Serumula, the organization has struggled under the weight of insufficient financial backing, declining operational support and mounting debts that ultimately placed the academy under serious financial and legal pressure,” it states.

It notes that they have explored every possible avenue to save the institution, including seeking partnerships, sponsorships, donor support and long-term collaborations from various stakeholders and institutions.

“Unfortunately, these efforts did not yield the level of support necessary to secure the future of the academy,” it says.

Moreover, Serumula extended its deepest gratitude to every member, parent, supporter, sponsor, partner, audience member and friend who walked this journey with them over the past 19 years. “Your support, encouragement and belief in our vision helped shape Serumula into a respected artistic and cultural institution,” it continues.

Throughout its existence, Serumula Performing Arts Academy proudly contributed to the growth of music, arts education, youth empowerment and cultural expression within Lesotho and beyond. “The memories created, the lives touched and the legacy built through our work will forever remain part of our story,” it adds.

As part of preparing to close this chapter, Serumula will have a special Tribute Concert and Farewell Music Festival to celebrate the journey, achievements, music and impact of Serumula over the past 19 years on date to be announced.

The statement emphasises that though this chapter comes to an end, they remain proud of everything they achieved together as a community.

Serumula Performing Arts Academy was founded in January 2007 by renowned composer and music director Lehlomela Tente, the academy is dedicated to training vocalists, advancing African choral traditions and performing a wide range of musical styles, from sacred hymns to contemporary pop and gospel.
