Maseru, Feb. 18 — The number of youth-operated online businesses in Maseru is steadily increasing as young Basotho turn to digital platforms to market products ranging from clothing to cosmetics.
Young entrepreneurs say social media has become a powerful and affordable tool that enables them to reach customers without the high costs associated with operating physical shops.
In an interview with the Agency, Ms. Nthati Lucas, who runs an online clothing business on Facebook, said the digital era has transformed the way both entrepreneurs and customers conduct business.
“We are living in a techno world where almost everything is digital. From the client’s side, if I want something, the first place I go to is Facebook,” she said.
Ms. Lucas explained that the platform provides business tools that allow entrepreneurs to expand their reach.
“Facebook introduced options such as boosting and sponsoring pages, which allow us to reach large crowds. It not only puts eyes on the business, but its effectiveness promptly calls prospects to action and increases sales in ways that traditional advertising is not able to,” she said.
She noted that online platforms significantly reduce operational costs such as rent and utilities, making it easier for young people with limited capital to start businesses.
Another entrepreneur, Ms. Tšoanelo Moseme, who operates a nails and lashes business, said social media advertising has enabled her to attract more clients.
“Most of my clients come from Facebook. Using ads helps me reach more people beyond my immediate circle,” she said.
Ms. Moseme added that social media platforms have made it easier for small beauty businesses to gain visibility without relying solely on word of mouth.
The growth in online enterprises comes at a time when many young people are seeking alternative sources of income amid limited formal employment opportunities in the country.
