WHO ISSUES URGENT WARNING OVER PIG TAPEWORM

Maseru, Oct. 29 — The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global health advisory urging people to stop consuming undercooked or raw pork amid rising concerns over a dangerous pig tapeworm, Taenia solium, which poses serious health risks to humans.

According to WHO, pigs become infected when they ingest tapeworm eggs from food or water contaminated with human faeces. These eggs develop into larval cysts, known as cysticerci, within the pig’s muscle tissue. 

When humans consume pork that is undercooked or raw and contains these cysts, the larvae can mature into adult tapeworms in the human intestine, leading to a condition called taeniasis. . . .
