Maseru, Oct. 25 — The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a strong advisory urging people to stop diagnosing themselves and self-medicating. This warning comes in light of rising global concerns over fungi and parasites developing resistance to antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics.
According to WHO, drug resistance is rendering many medications ineffective, making infections increasingly difficult or even impossible to treat. This situation heightens the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.
In response, WHO emphasises that individuals should only take antibiotics as prescribed by a qualified health professional and complete the full course of medication.
The misuse and overuse of antibiotics are key drivers of antimicrobial resistance.
The organization also encourages practicing good hygiene, getting vaccinated, and avoiding self-medication to curb the growing threat.
WHO stresses that addressing this issue is a global health priority, requiring responsible antibiotic use, preventive health measures, and better education on the risks of self-diagnosis and unprescribed treatments.
