YOUNG OFFENDER SENTENCE SUSPENDED

Qacha’sNek, April 15 — Senior Magistrate Ts’eliso Bale has today suspended a two years Juvenile Training Centre (JTC) sentence of a young sexual assault offender on condition that he does not commit the same act in two years.

Reports show that there has been a surge in the number of the centre’s inmates convicted of sexual offences mirroring that of inmates in adult jails, nearly 70 percent of the centre’s inmates were convicted of rape.

It is estimated that a staggering nine in every 10 inmates in adult jails are serving sentences for sexual offences.

The court heard that the perpetrator of Ha Mohlapiso aged 16 raped a six years child on April 3, 2024.
