Maseru, July 27 — Despite progress having been reported earlier regarding the construction of Litenteng bridge Ha Tsunyane Roma, construction has been on hold since the beginning of July.
In an interview Manonyane Community Council Chairperson, Mr. Makhaola Chele confirmed this saying the work stopped as they are awaiting funds allocation for this quarter to pay the workers.
He explained that the money is allocated quarterly so they have not received money for the current quarter.
“As soon as we have the money, which could be before the end of this week, the work will resume,” he said.
On the other hand, Mr. Chele said there is notable progress saying maybe if it were not for heavy rains and these logistical delays progress would be very significant.
Earlier, Mr. Mohlapiso Ts’iu, Foreman at the project had told the Agency that they have completed construction of two columns which he said are essential for supporting the weight of the bridge deck and transferring loads to the foundation.
He said they are putting up the wing wall, a retaining wall that extends from sides of the bridge abutment or culvert to support the adjacent soil and prevent soil erosion. He explained that these walls improve the durability and strength of the main structure by distributing loads efficiently.
“The wing walls are constructed to support the abutment as well as guide water flow under the bridge. They also help to play an important role in the retention of soil and preventing soil erosion,” he said.
He added that once they have completed the wing walls, then they will install the Armco barriers. However, he indicated that the ongoing rains result in delay therefore saying they might take longer than expected.
Meanwhile, Litenteng bridge collapsed in December 2020 due to heavy rains and the villagers made a temporary structure while awaiting the government to construct the access bridge.
The temporary bridge that was eroded in March 2025 was the second one as the first one collapsed in December 2023 during heavy rains.
The structure was made of available materials like poles made from trees from the forest, cement and corrugated iron sheets.
The construction is being done by the Manonyane Community Council through engagement of local contractors and labourers.
