QUEEN GRACES THE COMMONWEALTH SERVICE DAY

Maseru, Mar. 11 — Queen ‘Masenate Seeiso and Members of the Royal Family are reported to have joined the Royal Commonwealth Society at Westminster Abbey for the annual Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration Organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society

This event is reported to be the oldest charity dedicated to the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration is the world’s premier public event to celebrate the Commonwealth.

The Service provides an annual opportunity to promote the value and values of this voluntary association of nations bound together in common endeavor whereby the Queen was joined by Members of The Royal Family, Commonwealth dignitaries and school children from across the United Kingdom to celebrate Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey.

Not only does the Commonwealth mark its 75th anniversary, but 2024 is the second year of the Year of Youth, recognising the tremendous contributions of young people in strengthening the people-to-people links across this family of nations.

This year will also see the bi-annual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where Rwanda will hand over to Samoa as the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office. Taking place in October, the theme of CHOGM and the theme for the Service is One Resilient Common Future will be ‘Transforming our Common Wealth’.

The Commonwealth theme echoes back to the Commonwealth’s founding pledges: a commitment 75 years ago to ‘peace, liberty and progress’ in the London Declaration that can only be achieved by building resilient communities and environments.

This theme of resilience was evident throughout the performances and readings of the Service, spanning all five regions of the Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, King Charles III’s  Commonwealth Day Message which was viewed during the Service, emphasised these inter-related themes of resilience, collective progress and youth.

Commonwealth Day is always marked on the second Monday in March. The event celebrates the “people and cultures” of the Commonwealth nations which is an association of 54 member states from across the world.
