Berea, June 19 — Liphokoaneng community in Berea district said the prolonged drought encountered during summer cropping has led to a decline in the maize harvest and thus risking an increased chances of food insecurity in the country.
When approached for comment, Area chief of Ha-Ralekeke Area chief and a farmer Mr. Shophane Lephethesane said they did fully embark on summer cropping with the hopes high of getting a good harvest, but that initiative has yielded nothing.
Chief Lephethesane said before the drought hit them maize crops were looking healthy, but along the journey of summer cropping they were badly encountered dry weather events which led to poor production of maize cobs. . .
