SHEEP SCAB CAMPAIGN COMMENCES

Mohale’s Hoek, January 09 — The District Agricultural Officer (DAO), Mrs. ‘Malerato Lekhooa has on Tuesday confirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition under Livestock Services, will this week embark on Sheep Scab Campaign.

Mrs. Lekhooa stated this in an interview with the Agency by noting that they have had meetings with Chairmen from various Wool Sheds in preparation for the campaign, noting the Ministry has enough medical supplies to vaccinate about 133,000 sheep and 37,700 goats, adding that they have pleaded with chiefs and councilors to spread the message.

Mrs. Lekhooa stated that this campaign is carried out annually from January to February, highlighting that one major condition for Lesotho’s Wool and Mohair to be exported to Port Elizabeth, is that sheep and goats be vaccinated against scab and other bugs, while ensuring that they do not have diseases like foot to mouth as this could compromise the quality of wool, therefore leading to the complete ban in exportation.

On the other hand chairman from Ramosothoane Wool Shed, Mr. Tsikela Lillane articulated that farmers are fully prepared to have their livestock vaccinated as they know that failure to do so could be a great loss on their side.
