 ACCUSED SENTENCED FOR UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF DAGGA

 Maseru, Feb. 09 — Magistrate Puseletso McPherson on Monday sentenced  ‘Matsepang Litabe (54) after finding her guilty of unlawful possession of dagga.

Litabe was ordered to pay a fine of M4,000 or serve four years’ imprisonment, half of which was suspended.

The accused was charged with contravening Section 91(2) of the Penal Code Act No. 6 of 2010.

Detective Woman Police Constable Chabana, stationed at Maseru Rural Headquarters, testified that on February 06, 2026, she received a tip-off that the accused was in possession of dagga. Acting on the information, she proceeded to the accused’s residence where she found 115 packets of dagga.

She stated that she asked the accused to produce a licence for the dagga, which she failed to do, leading to her arrest.

In mitigation, the accused told the court that she is a widow and has children who are still attending school.She further explained that she earns a living by doing piece jobs.

In passing sentence, Magistrate McPherson stated that part of the sentence was suspended because the accused pleaded guilty and did not waste the court’s time.

The accused was accordingly ordered to pay a fine of M4,000 or serve four years’ imprisonment, half suspended.
