ACTING PM DECLARES STATE OF DISASTER ON YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

Maseru, July. 08 — The Acting Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara has declared a state of disaster on socio-economic effects of the high rates of youth unemployment and job losses in Lesotho which threaten the livelihood of the people of Basotho.

This the acting PM has done pursuant to section 3 of the Disaster Management Authority Act, 1997.

It is expected to be for a period of 2 years with effect from the date of the publication in the Gazette to June, 30th, 2027.

The government has acknowledged the seriousness of the problem and launched several initiatives.

These include setting aside millions of maloti to support youth-led businesses, tax incentives to encourage job creation and programs such as road construction and energy access projects that are designed to employ young people.

In addition, the government has introduced apprenticeships and public service internships to provide work experience to the youth.

Despite these efforts, youth unemployment remains high and many young people believe the response is not fast or effective enough. . . .
