ARGENTINA ADVANCES TO QUARTER FINALS

The World Cup defending champions, Argentina have kept their dreams of retaining the cup alive after thrashing Egypt by 3-2 on Tuesday and thus booking their place at the quarter finals of FIFA 2026 World Cup games.

Despite going home with a historic record of reaching the last 16, Egypt stunned the world at Atlanta Stadium when it led the defending champions 2-0 for over 70 minutes of the game.

However, Argentina regrouped and came down from that defeat to claim victory over Egypt with 3-2 within the dying 13 minutes of the game.

The Pharaohs who  started very fast with the attacks, managed to find the breakthrough in the 13th minute of the game as the header from Yasser Ibrahim and later in the 67th minutes of the second half, Mostafa Ziko netted the second goal.

The Argentines’ frustrations rose to the peak when the Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved Lionel Messi’s penalty.

The Egyptians trailed with 2-0 victory until the 79th minute of the game when Cristian Romero revived the hopes of Argentines by finding the back of the net, then four minutes later Messi equalized.

As the game progressed towards the end, Argentina continued to apply more pressure on Egypt until a point where Enzo Fernandez scored a winning goal at the 93rd minute of the stoppage time.

Having secured a spot in the quarter finals, Argentina will then lock horns with Switzerland in the last eight of the world biggest tournament at Kansas City.

On yet another encounter of the last 16, Switzerland faced Colombia where the played a goalless draw which forced them to head for a penalty shootout which ended with Switzerland advancing to the quarter finals following their 4-3 victory.
