Maseru, July 07 — Vodacom Lesotho has partnered with the Mountain Runners Athletics Club to sponsor this year’s event as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, with organisers saying the event is aimed at promoting healthy living, stimulating the local economy and creating positive opportunities for young people.
Speaking at the launch in Maseru on Tuesday, Mountain Runners Club Representative, Mr. Rorisang Mabusela said their vision is to grow the event into an internationally recognised race capable of attracting athletes from outside Lesotho.
He said increased international participation will boost tourism by creating demand for accommodation, transport and other local services while encouraging political leaders to recognise sport as a driver of economic development.
Mr. Mabusela indicated that the race, scheduled for September 05, will feature 5km, 10km and 21km categories from St. Michael’s to Lekhalong la Baroa.
Vice President of the Maseru Athletics Academy, Mr. Teboho Sello, welcomed Vodacom Lesotho’s support, saying local sponsorship gives athletes confidence and demonstrates that Basotho businesses are investing in the country’s sporting talent.
He expressed hope that more local companies will follow Vodacom’s example and contribute towards the development of athletics in Lesotho.
Vodacom Lesotho Foundation representative, Mr. Tsepo Ntaopane said the sponsorship forms part of the company’s ‘Mabo Mocha-O-Chele’ campaign marking 30 years of operations in Lesotho.
He said the company believes sport has the power to transform lives and unite communities, adding that the initiative will also include a community development project along the marathon route.
Mr. Ntaopane said Vodacom intends to work with communities beyond the race day through education and other empowerment initiatives that will leave a lasting impact.
Organisers said safety arrangements, including ambulances, emergency personnel, transport and security services, have been put in place to ensure the event runs smoothly.
