BASOTHO NOT INTERESTED IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

Maseru, Sept. 29 — Multitudes of Basotho have shown no interest in the Local Government elections, this is seen when crossing over to South Africa (SA) during the day of the elections.

In an interview with some crossing over to SA, Mr. Sello Mahooe said elections no longer serve the interest of the public but rather of politicians.

He said the idea of Councillors was a good idea provided decentralisation was implemented as it aimed at bringing power to local government authorities, but he said the issue of parliamentarians of not progressing the matter has ruined everything.

Mr. Mahooe noted that since 1993 when he first casted his vote, he has never seen anything positive impacting the lives of people instead, there is a public outcry about the way the governments deal with issues.

Mrs. Marelebohile Janki also shared the same sentiments that elections in Lesotho are of no use, let alone the Local Government ones, she said Councillors literally do nothing except to intervene in people fighting over sites.

Based on the Agency’s observation, it  is clear a large proportion of the public has had enough of the political elite, who they neither trust nor relate to.

Indeed, this election has been viewed by many as a way for disillusioned voters to put a middle finger up to the political establishment.

With all parties having a track record of breaking manifesto pledges. Recent election campaigns have been full of u-turns, and even outright lies in local candidates’ leaflets.
