DAIRY SHUTDOWN DISRUPTS MILK MARKET FOR BEREA FARMERS

Berea, May 12 — Dairy farmers in Teyateyaneng are facing financial strain after the Teyateyaneng Dairy suspended its operations on April 24, forcing them to abandon formal markets and sell milk directly from their homes.

One of the affected farmers, Mr. Leabua Lenea, stated in an interview with the Agency that the closure has had a negative impact on his business, noting that the dairy was his most reliable market.

He added that the situation has also affected his income, as he still has to pay employees and purchase animal feed despite reduced sales.

Mr. Lenea further explained that selling milk at home has not been sufficient, as not all of his produce is being purchased, resulting in financial losses. He warned that if the situation continues for an extended period, he may be forced to shut down his business.

Meanwhile, dairy farm assistant Mr. Pusetso Khetheng stated that they have been informed that Foot and Mouth Disease does not affect milk production, adding that milk remains safe for consumption and can be consumed without fear.
