Maseru, Oct.27—The European Union film festival school screenings hosted by Alliance Francaise de Maseru is reported to have registered success.
The screenings were part of the 4th European Film Festival in Lesotho and the 2nd binational edition with Eswatini. The screenings ran from October 17 to 24 with a maximum of about 150 learners per day.
Speaking in an interview, Alliance Francaise de Maseru Director Ms. Elisabeth Douillet said they hosted 12 schools with six from outside Maseru saying this was done to ensure that the film festival reaches broader audiences including young children.
She said though the selection was based on partner schools, those teaching French, it included government schools as well in and outside Maseru.
She said watching movies helps in enhancing creativity as they had different topics from climate change, equality, friendship, resilience, human rights and living together.
“More than 800 learners took part in this special initiative, discovering a range of captivating European films that opened windows to new cultures, languages, and perspectives, while sparking meaningful conversations about creativity, identity, and social issues”, she said.”
She expressed gratitude to all the participating schools, teachers and learners for their enthusiasm and curiosity saying this reminded them of the power of cinema to connect, inspire, and educate the next generation of storytellers.
Meanwhile, from Tuesday this week screenings will be at the National University of Lesotho, The Hub Morija and Cafe What for students and broader community.
The European Union Film Festival will also host workshops for cinema students and emerging filmmakers to foster creativity, dialogue and lasting ties.
