Qacha’s Nek, Feb. 05 — In the wake of a devastating boat accident that claimed the lives of a 32-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy on the Senqu River, the government has taken urgent steps to enhance safety for river crossings.
On Wednesday, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Ts’epang Koele, handed over ten oars and 30 life jackets to local boat steersmen.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Koele emphasized the ministry’s commitment to ensuring safe mobility for Basotho, whether by road or river.
She acknowledged the dangers of crossing without proper safety equipment and announced that while boat transport will soon fall under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, immediate measures are being taken to prevent further tragedies.
