GOVERNMENT TO RELIEVE FLOODS, SNOW VICTIMS

Maseru, May 12 — The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) is currently collecting data on the extent to which flash floods and snow have affected people across the country in a bid to provide relief assistance.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane, in a statement in which he said the government has learnt that floods and snow have left some people devastated after their businesses, houses and fields were destroyed.

“We sympathise with all those affected by floods and snow,” he said.

Mr. Matekane appealed to the public to cooperate with the DMA in efforts to combat disasters and to adhere to the Authority’s warnings before undertaking trips during unfavourable weather conditions.

He also called on Community Councils, Chiefs and government ministries to refrain from allocating land in unsuitable areas for housing, agriculture and other developments in order to reduce the impact of disasters.

“We urge all stakeholders, particularly Chiefs, Community Councils, the media and Community Policing Committees, to disseminate information on disasters and assist affected communities where possible,” he added.

Meanwhile, the country experienced flash floods and snowfall earlier this month, which destroyed roads, schools, fields and houses.
