LCS RECRUITS IDENTIFIED

Maseru, July 24 — Some of Lesotho Correctional Service(LCS) Recruits who conducted the search exercise at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) have been identified.

They were identified by Chief Officer Tololi Rats’ele before the Commission Of Inquiry on the escape of inmates when watching the footage on the search exercise that was conducted at the institution on December 22, last year.

Chief Officer Rats’ele was the one who led this search team and was seen addressing the recruits around 07:00 a.m. prior to the search.

As the recruits entered into the prison blocks, some of them were seen holding fighting sticks and Chief Officer Rats’ele was able to recognize them.

He indicated that the Recruits first went to block A , C and D and half of them went to maximum which they searched at the same time as block B.

He said there were eleven instructors during the search although he admitted there was no supervision as per footage which featured maximum block.

He also indicated that he was surprised to see the prison cells opened at maximum block before he could arrive, saying that was not supposed to have  happened.

Meanwhile some recruits were seen going in and out of Tlotliso Bereng’s cell, who is now paralysed after being assaulted by recruits during the search.

However there are areas which have not been covered by camera as per footage but some inmates were seen being injured at maximum block.

The Commission is continuing to watch footage on other blocks which also feature how the search exercise was conducted.
