Maseru, Mar. 05 — Lesotho can prevent an estimated 9,500 cases of stunting annually if it were to meet the proposed 2030 World Health Assembly global nutrition target on stunting.
This is according to the report of a fact finding mission by the Nutrition International team that was carried out in September 2024 in Lesotho.
In 2012, the World Health Assembly set global nutrition targets to spur action and investment for addressing malnutrition.
The targets are currently being evaluated, reset and will likely be extended to 2030. These targets aim to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the number of stunted children, a 50 percent reduction of the prevalence of anaemia in women of reproductive age, a 30 percent reduction of low birthweight among newborns and an increase in the rate of exclusive breastfeeding to 70 percent in the first six months.
