Maseru, July 16 — Lesotho has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable development and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) currently underway at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The opening of the High-Level Segment of the forum brought together world leaders, policymakers and development partners to review progress made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking during the General Debate, the Head of the Lesotho Delegation Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane delivered the country’s National Statement, underscoring the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and the acceleration of efforts towards attaining the SDGs by 2030.
The delegation also participated in a Stock-Taking Session on the implementation of the Pact for the Future, where Lesotho highlighted progress made in advancing SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The Lesotho delegation was led by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning and included the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, reflecting the government’s commitment to a coordinated and multi-sectoral approach to sustainable development.
Other members of the delegation included Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Mr. Lira Ralebese, Lesotho’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Matete ‘Nena, Commissioner of Water, Mr. Lebohang Maseru, Counsellor Political at Lesotho’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Mrs. Mamojaki Ramothamo; Counsellor Economic, Mr. Matooane Letsoela First Secretary, Mrs. Marethabile Rapapa and Senior Economic Planner in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Ms. Limakatso Matekane.
The High-Level Political Forum serves as the United Nations’ central platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The forum provides countries with an opportunity to share experiences, challenges and best practices in implementing sustainable development initiatives.
Lesotho’s participation in the forum demonstrates the country’s continued commitment to strengthening partnerships, mobilising resources and fostering inclusive development aimed at improving the livelihoods of Basotho while ensuring no one is left behind.
