Maseru, July 16 — The Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO) is continuing its efforts to create market opportunities for local entrepreneurs through the ongoing five-day King’s Birthday Market at Maseru Mall.
Today marks the fourth day of the annual market, which has brought together small and medium-sized enterprises from across the country to showcase and sell their products while connecting with potential customers and established retailers.
Speaking in an interview, BEDCO Marketing Officer, Mr. Tsépo Mosololi said the King’s Birthday Market is aimed at promoting emerging businesses by exposing them to the formal retail environment.
He explained that the initiative allows entrepreneurs to gain practical experience in product presentation, customer service and business management, while also learning what is required to compete in larger retail markets.
Mr. Mosololi said interactions with retail shops provide business owners with valuable insights into maintaining product quality, meeting customer expectations and building sustainable business relationships. He noted that such exposure is essential for the growth and long-term success of local enterprises.
He further said the market is also intended to bring Basotho together in celebration of King Letsie III’s Birthday while promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage through locally produced goods, traditional crafts, fashion, food and entertainment.
Business owners participating in the market have welcomed the initiative, saying it not only provides a platform to increase sales but also enables them to network with larger retailers, attract new customers and explore future business partnerships. Many said the experience has helped improve the visibility of their brands and opened doors to new commercial opportunities.
The King’s Birthday Market has been held annually for the past three years and has become one of BEDCO’s flagship initiatives to support entrepreneurship and enterprise development. Through such programmes, BEDCO continues to contribute to job creation, economic diversification and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, which are widely recognised as key drivers of Lesotho’s economy.
