Maseru, Aug.19 — Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for diplomatic intervention on frozen South African (SA) bank accounts of Basotho migrant workers.
This after the Leader of Basotho National Party (BNP) Mr Machesetsa Mofomobe filed an urgent motion on the provisions of standing order number 29, requesting the House to debate on escalating crisis of frozen SA bank accounts of Basotho migrant workers.
Mr. Mofomobe said he received a report from some Basotho migrant workers who opened SA bank accounts using valid Lesotho passports, that banks are now arbitrarily freezing their accounts and demand them to present work permits.

He indicated that many of the affected Basotho workers have had their lawful earnings withheld and unable to access their funds, causing significant financial distress to themselves and their dependants back home.
He clarified that the affected workers are low income earners, who mostly work at SA factories and as domestic workers, saying many of whom have contributed significantly to Lesotho and SA’s economy. . . .
