Qacha’s Nek, Sept. 16 — Ntene Mohapi (59) was sentenced by Qacha’s Nek Magistrate Court on Tuesday to a fine of M5,000 or five years in prison for assaulting his wife, with half of the sentence suspended for two years.
Magistrate Ponts’o Jankie-Lehasa handed down the sentence after considering that Mohapi, a retired miner, is a first-time offender. “However, it is the duty of this court to uphold the law,” she emphasized.
Mohapi pleaded guilty to contravening section 30(2) read with 109(1) of the Penal Code Act No.6 of 2010, admitting that on September 14, 2025, he assaulted his wife by strangling her.
During the trial, Senior Crown Counsel Advocate Tsotang Maile accepted his plea and outlined the facts, saying the victim was at home on September 15 when her husband, now using a different bedroom, claimed his room had been tampered with.
