SNOW, SEVERE COLD EXPECTED IN THE HIGHLANDS

Maseru, June 02 — The Lesotho Meteorological Services has urged residents in the highlands to prepare for harsh winter conditions as snowfall and severe cold temperatures are expected this week.

According to the Lesotho Meteorological services, snowfall is expected during the night from Wednesday, while biting cold conditions are forecast from Thursday through Friday, with temperatures expected to drop significantly across parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has issued a public alert urging communities to take precautionary measures ahead of the anticipated snowfall and extreme cold weather.

The DMA has advised people to avoid unnecessary long-distance travel, as this could result in travellers becoming trapped by snow or exposed to extreme cold conditions. The authority further urged the public to avoid travelling during the early morning hours and at night when temperatures are expected to be at their lowest.

The DMA warned that roads may become icy and hazardous, potentially disrupting travel and access to essential services.

Livestock owners have been encouraged to provide adequate shelter for their animals and remain vigilant against foot-and-mouth disease.

They have also been advised to consult extension officers to assess the health of their livestock and avoid unnecessary gatherings of animals to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

The DMA also cautioned residents against using unsafe heating methods that could increase the risk of fires and advised the public to closely monitor weather updates and follow guidance issued by relevant authorities.
