Quthing, July 31 — More than 15 tons of sorghum grain have been harvested at Phahameng individual block farming during the ongoing harvesting exercise with a combine harvester at the Central Agricultural Resource Centre.
The yield, equivalent to over 200 bags of 50 kg each, was obtained from 20 hectares of sorghum fields harvested by the district’s Department of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition.
District Crops Officer, Mr. Katleho Mats’abisa told the Agency that harvesting will continue next week at Mjanyane in the Tele Agricultural Resource Centre, where another 20 hectares of sorghum planted by an individual block farmer will be harvested.
He added that the harvester will later assist other farmers according to the department’s schedule.
Mr. Mats’abisa further noted that another combine harvester is expected to arrive next week to begin maize harvesting in the district, with operations continuing until the end of the month.
He appealed to farmers to continue planting winter crops such as wheat and peas, as well as vegetables and fodder. He emphasized that the Department of Agriculture and Food Security offices remain available to provide farmers with technical support to boost food production, fight hunger, and generate income.
Winter cropping in Quthing runs from April to early August, while summer cropping spans August to January. The district has six agricultural resource centres: Mphaki, Tlatlametsi, Makoae, Koali, Central, and Tele.
