Maseru, March 09 — Sefikeng taxi drivers express dismay to the municipality for not taking action upon taxi cabs (4+1) drivers who interrupt their business by taking their passengers.
In an interview with the Agency, one of Sefikeng taxi drivers Mr. Keketso Mohale said 4+1 taxis have increased to a high level, therefore their business is interrupted because they hardly get passengers.
He showed that they have talked to the Municipality about this but failed to address their issue.
Mr. Mohale emphasised that they have also discussed this matter with their association called Sefikeng and Mosenekeng Taxi Drivers Association but they are still facing the same challenges to date because 4+1 taxi drivers cannot take instructions from anyone.
He indicated that their business is falling apart due to uncontrollable 4+1 taxi drivers, he showed that most of these drivers are not experienced and it is not easy to get their public drivers licence. Therefore they squeeze everywhere and take their passengers which makes it hard for their business to operate smoothly.
He continued to show that it seems like they are under pressure to take as many trips as possible so that they are left with some cash of their own having reached the daily target.
“Taxi cab drivers take only four passengers, this causes road traffic which is another factor that contributes to our business failure,’’ he said.
He also indicated that damaged roads also contribute to the poor operation as they cause them to take a long time trying to overcome potholes and cost them to repair their wheel more often.
“We appeal to the municipality to take this into consideration and provide a great space where 4+1 taxis will park to take passengers not in our platform to keep our business alive because that is where our daily bread comes from,” he said.
Transport plays a crucial role in employment and many people’s livelihoods as transportation is an essential development and socio-economic improvement of communities and the countries.
