Maseru, May 27 — The local chapter of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) will this coming Saturday gather at the Matsieng Royal Palace to celebrate Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso’s 50th birthday.
The community event will unveil a permanent peace monument and plant 50 fruit trees to symbolize enduring growth, unity and a nourished peaceful future for all, said IWPG Spokesperson Mrs. ‘Malineo Mots’ephe in an interview with the Agency.
She said the event is intended to honour Her Majesty’s golden jubilee birthday while sowing seeds of peace to the Matsieng community and Basotho at large. “Her Majesty’s grace has long been a guiding light for our people therefore we will be celebrating half a century of her life by cementing her legacy. Peace is not just a concept, it is an action, starting right in our communities”, she said.
She said the event will center around “the motherly heart”, emphasizing women’s vital role as global peacemakers and nurturers of future generations.
“Planting of trees acts as a living, breathing symbol of peace. The trees will eventually provide nourishment for the local community, reflecting how maternal love and small actions yield lasting, sustainable benefits”, she added.
Mrs. Mots’epe indicated that female leaders, advocates and community members as well as sodalities of St. Louis Catholic Mission will share visions of sustainable peace, conflict resolution and the cessation of war.
She added that with the trees they intend to alleviate poverty saying women will make dried and canned fruits.
Moreover, aligning with IWPG’s wider global initiatives such as the observance of International Women’s Peace Day and the advocacy for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), this localized event bridges the gap between global goals and community-level action. By integrating tree planting with peace education, IWPG continues to empower women across all borders.
Meanwhile the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Lesotho Chapter was officially established in January 2018, operating as an active local branch of the global organization.
The group focuses on women’s empowerment, organizing events like youth peace art competitions and workshops dedicated to maternal instincts and peace advocacy.
