Berea, May 27 — A 25 year-old entrepreneur from Lekokoaneng, Berea is transforming recycled waste materials into eco-briquettes, creating a business that promotes environmental protection while offering employment opportunities.
During an interview with the Agency, Mr. Mokete Makoko stated that he began producing environmentally friendly briquettes in response to rising fuel prices, with the goals of helping communities access affordable fuel alternatives while also creating employment opportunities through recycling initiatives.
He explained that the briquettes differ from traditional charcoal as they produce no smoke, are environmentally safe and burn for a longer period.
Mr. Makoko further stated that the briquettes are made from recycled materials, including corn stalks, paper, clay and cow dung.
He also said he currently works with one employee but hopes to expand production in the future in order to create more jobs, including opportunities for people involved in recycling and production.
He added that his target market includes local communities as well as poultry farmers, noting that chickens require warm conditions that can be maintained using the briquettes.
The initiative aims to reduce deforestation by limiting the cutting down of trees for fuel. It also seeks to reduce pollution caused by smoke-producing fuels while promoting recycling and sustainable energy solutions within communities.
