Mokhotlong, Dec. 16 — The public has been urged to stop destroying ranges with fire to avoid contributing to climate change.
The Range Technical Officer from Department of Environment and Forestry in the district, Mr. Moroma Ntlaloe said this when speaking at a gathering held at Khotsang Moreneng in the Malingoaneng area, Mokhotlong on Monday.
Supported by the World Food Programme (WFP) through its project on Integrated Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable (IACoV) and food insecure populations in Lesotho, the public gathering was intended to further raise awareness of communities on the impacts of climate change, importance of adaptation and effective use of climate information for seasonal planning and risk management.
Mr. Ntlaloe said for this year only, assessments done on the burned ranges show that 1200 hectares have been affected by fire damaging the grass that livestock was supposed to be grazing.
