GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO REDUCING DISASTEROUS RISKS

Maseru, Jan.31 — The government of Lesotho is committed to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), says the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police Mr. Lebona Lephema.

Mr. Lephema said that the long-term vision of the government of Lesotho in disaster reductions include Regulations on Urban Preparedness, National Strategic Development Plan II (NSDP), Agenda 2063 as well as Maseru 2050.

He said that the government through his ministry is fully committed to disaster risk reduction particularly on two pillars being Leasing Policy and National Housing Policy 2018 which he said emphasizes on construction of houses that can withstand disasters.

He said that proper planning is considered in minimizing risks saying that housing should be developed in areas that are less prone to flooding.

He stated that the government and community need to make interventions in housing development and ensure that housing meets certain standards that withstand disaster emphasizing that they should highlight disaster through resilient housing. . .
