Maseru, Mar. 18 — Two members of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) who were reported to have been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Wepener have been released.
This was said by the Lesotho Mounted Police Service Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Kabelo Halahala in an interview with the Agency on Monday.
Senior Superintendent Halahala said that the aforementioned officers were arrested together with two complainants who had reported their cattle to be missing and were rushing to a tip off as there were cattle which were reported to be seen in Wepener.
He stated that the two LMPS members were arrested at a roadblock after their firearms did not have proper documentation to allow them to be in South Africa with and without passports.
Senior Superintendent Halahala mentioned that together with her counterparts in South Africa, the Commissioner of Police was able to have fruitful deliberations that led to the freeing of the officers.
He added that the release was also made possible by the intervention of the South African High Commission.
Stock Theft happening between the borders of Lesotho and South Africa has been one of the greatest challenges that the two countries have been faced with.
It has called on a number of collaborative efforts by the two countries to put an end to it.
Previously, the members of the Lesotho Defence Force have also been arrested in South Africa while following a tip off of Basotho cattle who were crossing over to South Africa.
