MOKHOTLONG COMMUNITY SENSITIZED ON ADMINISTRATION OF ESTATES, INHERITANCE ACT 2024

Mokhotlong, Aug. 1 – The Master of the High Court sensitized the Mokhotlong community on the Administration of Estates and Inheritance Act, 2024, on Friday at Pitso Ground.

Detailing what the law entails, Advocate Tholoana Hlapisi said the enactment of this law was carried out on April 2, 2024, and it introduces vital reforms to the management and distribution of deceased’s estates and inheritance.

Adv. Hlapisi added that it also addresses the unfair distribution of inheritance imposed by customary law practices.

Advocate Mapuseletso Lekhesa from the Master of the High Court Mokhotlong also elaborated on what is required for drafting a will to achieve fair and peaceful distribution of estates and inheritance.

She stated that for a will to be valid, it must be signed, have two witnesses over the age of 18 who will also sign before the testator, be dated, and include the full name, nationality, identity number, address, and marital status of the testator. In the case of the witnesses, they should also write their full names and identification numbers.

If the deceased’s inheritance does not exceed M145,000, a form will be provided by the village chief to fill out, stating the inheritance of the deceased, which should then be taken to the Master of the High Court for distribution.
