Maseru, Nov. 04 — Newly elected Botswana President Advocate Duma Boko has been sworn into office on Monday morning, following his victory over a 58 year Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) rule.
The BDP has ruled Botswana for 58 years until Friday elections when it came out with only four parliamentary seats, while the Umbrella for Democratic change (UDC) won a majority with 35 seats, with the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) coming out with five seats and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) walked away with 14 seats.
The UDC is a coalition of three opposition parties named Botswana National Front (BNF) led by Boko, Botswana People’s Party (BPP) and Alliance for Progressives (AP).
The outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi was appointed by former President Ian Khama as his Vice-President in 2014 following the retirement of Ponatshego Kediilwe who left due to health issues, making Masisi the only option for Presidency at Khama’s retirement.
