SENATE RETURNS FROM SHORT RECESSION

Maseru, Mar. 18 — After a brief recess dedicated to committee proceedings, the Senate is set to reconvene tomorrow (Tuesday), marking the beginning of the 4th Special Meeting of the First Session of the 11th Parliament of Lesotho.

Among the key agendas for discussion during this session are several urgent Bills crucial to the public interest. The forthcoming deliberations will focus on the Administration of Estates and Inheritance Bill 2024, Labour Bill 2024 and Occupational Safety and Health Bill 2024.

The Administration of Estates and Inheritance Bill 2024 seeks to revamp and consolidate existing laws concerning inheritance, administration and distribution of estates. 

Notable provisions include the abolition of customary law heirship, the introduction of female child inheritance, equal inheritance rights for siblings regardless of age or gender and provisions for inheritance of children born out of wedlock from their fathers, among others.

Furthermore, the Labour Bill 2024, aims to establish a comprehensive framework for regulating employment relations, promoting fair labour practices, and safeguarding the welfare and rights of both employers and workers.

These Bills signify important legislative efforts aimed at addressing various societal concerns and ensuring equitable treatment within the legal framework of Lesotho. 

The Senate’s deliberations and subsequent actions on these Bills will have far-reaching implications for the nation’s legal landscape and the well-being of its citizens.
