Maseru, May 07 — Taxi fares across the country will increase from Monday next week following continued fuel price hikes, the Road Transport Board (RTB) has announced.
Speaking at a press conference held in Maseru on Thursday, RTB Chairperson Mr. Mathafeng Lechalaba said local taxi fares will increase by M4.00.
He said fares for 4+1 taxis will rise from M13.00 to M17.00, while minibus fares will increase from M12.00 to M15.00. However, fares for Sprinters and buses will remain unchanged at M10.00.
Mr. Lechalaba further stated that long-distance transport fares have also been adjusted, adding that the updated price lists will be released online in due course.
He explained that the fare adjustments were informed by rising fuel prices, recommendations from government consultants and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). He urged transport operators to comply with the new fare structure.
Meanwhile, some commuters interviewed by LENA expressed concern over the rising cost of living, saying salaries have remained unchanged despite increases in transport and household expenses.
One commuter, Mrs. Malesimole Mpete, said many people may be forced to walk to work in order to save money for essentials such as paraffin during the winter season.
“We cannot struggle to afford food, paraffin and transport at the same time,” she said, adding that parents also fear possible increases in school transport fares.
Taxi operators, on the other hand, welcomed the increase, saying it will help them cope with operational costs.
Mr. Sechaba Molete, a taxi driver, noted that some commuters may initially resist the new fares and choose to walk, but are likely to adjust over time.
Taxi fares are usually reviewed after every three years.
