MASERU — As the world today marks the International Day of Clean Energy, countries around the globe have been urged to commit to an international era of clean energy with speed, justice and collaboration at its core.
In his message, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Mr. Antonio Guterres stated that this year, renewables are projected to become the world’s largest source of electricity generation for the first time. He pointed out that the end of the fossil fuel age is certain.
He however said that governments must ensure that it comes swiftly and fairly. He indicated that this is crucial to save us from the worst of the climate crisis as well as to connect every person to clean energy and lifting millions out of poverty.
Mr. Guterres remarked that countries also need action to get finance flowing to the renewables revolution in emerging markets and developing economies. He said the lending capacity of Multilateral Development Banks should be increased. He added that the high cost of capital should be addressed. He further added that effective action on debt must be taken.
