COURT TO SENTENCE ACCUSED IN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CASE

MASERU—Magistrate Thamae Thamae will on January 27, 2026, deliver sentence on Teboho Liau (41) who was found guilty of assaulting his wife.

The said accused on December 02, 2025, at Sefika Complex in the district of Maseru unlawfully and intentionally assaulted his wife with the intention causing serious injuries or any form of lasting physical disability.

Woman Police Constable (W/P/C) ’Mabophelo Tjoloba from the Child and Gender Protection Unit at Maseru Central Police Station said that on December 02, 2025, her office received a report from a 35-year-old victim alleging that her former partner, Liau, attacked her at her workplace.

W/P/C Tjoloba said the police contacted Liau and asked him to report to the police station, which he did. When questioned, Liau denied assaulting the victim, stating that he had gone to deliver money for Christmas clothes for their children.

She said that after receiving his explanation, the police released him. However, shortly thereafter, the office received another report that a man was assaulting a woman at shops near Sefika. Police rushed to the scene and were shocked to find Liau assaulting the same victim. He was arrested immediately.

W/P/C Tjoloba added that investigations revealed that after leaving the police station, Liau followed the victim to her workplace and assaulted her again, resulting in the victim being rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

The prosecutor said while delivering the sentence, the court should consider the nature of the offence committed by the accused.

The lawyer representing the accused submitted that before the court imposes sentence, it is requested that the accused not be given a custodial sentence as he pleaded guilty as charged and did not waste the courts time. He further stated that that the accused was cooperative with the investigating officers and that the fight was not premeditated.

The accused is remanded in custody and will appear in court on January 27 2026
