Qacha’sNek, Oct. 23 — Residents of Makanyane and Ha Raene villages face a daily struggle for access to clean water, relying on unreliable and unprotected solar-powered sources that often force them to share water with animals.
Villagers brave the dark to reach the communal well, only to find it frequently dry.
In an interview with one of the residents, Mr. Stefanie Matloebe reported that malfunctioning solar systems, often impacted by weather conditions, leave them without water, especially when rains stir up dirt and debris, necessitating a return to digging for water.
“We are stranded,” he said, appealing for assistance with a piped water supply, noting that neighboring villages with water ponds could provide storage support.
