Maseru, Oct. 15 — Managing Director for Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion (CAFI) , Mr. Chaba Mokuku says he would like to see relations between his institution and media getting strengthened for increased efficacy, especially in reporting issues related to the project.
This, Mokuku said during a media workshop in Maseru on Wednesday where he, among other things, highlighted the pivotal role played by the media in issues of governance and economic development, to mention just a few.
He said media is a critical pillar in democracy, it’s role is sacred as media personnel usually get to face what other citizens are scared of, further noting how media creates a critical platform for debate and exchange of ideas and opinion, while on the other hand assuming the role of being the voice of the voiceless.
“Media safeguard freedoms, get persecuted, sometimes for holding authorities accountable, or the public itself,” Mokuku commented.
He however said the media must also be accountable in their reporting.
“But you also need to be held accountable. You must be fair and ethical in your reporting because the public trusts in you. We, as the public expect you to protect us with ethical, independent and fair reporting, instead of weaponising media tools to attack certain individuals”.
Mokuku said it could be helpful if reporting on CAFI is fair, adding that the project could be of help to the country’s economic growth.
Speaking of the role of his institution, he highlighted its role in speeding up and seeing through the economy enhancement policies of the government, collaborating with World Bank. . .
