Mokhotlong, June 03 — Members of the District Disaster Management Team (DDMT) from various sectors in Mokhotlong are participating in a three-day training on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) aimed at strengthening their capacity to respond to and manage disasters effectively.
The training, which began on Tuesday, is organised by the Disaster Management Authority with support from World Vision Lesotho under its Livelihoods and Economic Inclusion Project.
Facilitating the training, District Disaster Manager from Mohale’s Hoek, Mr. Lebohang Moletsane, said disaster risk reduction is everybody’s responsibility and that sustainable development cannot be achieved without it.

Mr. Moletsane said the objective of the training is to equip DDMT members with comprehensive knowledge of DRR concepts to enhance their understanding and improve the execution of their duties.
He reminded participants that their primary responsibility is to protect lives and property through the effective implementation of disaster risk reduction measures.
Mr. Moletsane encouraged members to continuously update their knowledge and skills in order to remain informed about best practices in disaster management and reduce vulnerabilities that often lead to disasters.
Topics covered during the training include the definition and concepts of disaster risk reduction, the disaster management cycle, the relationship between disasters and development, the establishment of the DMA and the core functions of DDMTs.

Meanwhile, Livelihoods and Economic Inclusion Technician in Mokhotlong, Mr. Komiti Rabolinyane, said the training forms part of efforts to strengthen capacity for the effective implementation of the project in the Senqu and Menoaneng Area Development Programmes.
He noted that building the skills and knowledge of stakeholders involved in disaster management is essential for improving community resilience and reducing disaster risks.
Disaster Risk Reduction refers to the systematic development and application of policies, strategies and practices aimed at minimising vulnerabilities and disaster risks within society. It seeks to prevent hazards where possible and mitigate their impact through preparedness measures, thereby contributing to sustainable development.
