Maseru, July 28 — The current Commander of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Lieutenant General Mojalefa Letsoela says interference within the army by those in authority led to instability which resulted in the death of Maaparankoe Mahao.
This he said during cross-examination in a case in which nine members of the army including Retired Army Commander Lieutenant General Tlali Kamoli are charged with the murder of Mahao.
He stated that Mahao was on August 29 2014 appointment as the Army Commander by the then competent authority. He however said, due to civil authority and command relations that prevailed at that time, that did not happen. He added that Kamoli had been lawfully discharged but in the midst of unhealthy civil-military relations, that did not happen.
The witness pointed out that the interference within the army structure by those in power resulted in divisions. He said there were two centres of power, one under Kamoli and one under Mahao.
