MEN URGED TO STEP UP IN MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

Maseru, Sept. 29 — In a strong call to action, men are being urged to take a more active role in supporting their partners during and after pregnancy, as concerns about maternal mental health rise sharply in the country and across the region.

Speaking in an interview, Miss. Ntséliseng Monyake from Love Maternity warned that the emotional and psychological toll of pregnancy and postpartum challenges can be overwhelming, often leaving mothers vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and even long-term trauma if left unaddressed.

She stressed the importance of men’s involvement. “Men’s involvement in maternal mental health should be normalised,” she said, stressing that pregnancy and childcare must no longer be viewed as women’s responsibilities alone.

She showed that when men actively support their partners by attending prenatal appointments, sharing household duties, and providing emotional reassurance, the risk of postpartum depression significantly decreases. Yet, cultural expectations often leave women to navigate these pressures alone.
