PUBLIC CALL FOR FOOD SUBSIDY

Maseru, Mar.20—With the current higher temperatures prevailing in the country, members of the public have called on the government to introduce subsidies in the cost of basic foodstuffs.

They said the cost of living in Lesotho is steadily becoming unbearable, saying that an 80kg bag of maize meal now costs about M600 while a 50kg bag costs M400 while a 25kg bag of maize-meal now costs M225 and 12.5kg bag M130.

Speaking in an interview, one Mrs. ‘Mathabo Letlatsa said  with high prices of foodstuffs it is a struggle to put food on the table saying the government should at least meet them halfway by subsidizing in particular maize meal, beans and peas as they are locally produced…
