QACHA’S NEK FARMERS FACE CLIMATE CHANGE HEAD-ON

Qacha’s Nek, Sept. 23 — A winter wonderland has unexpectedly enveloped Qacha’s Nek, bringing a mix of hope and uncertainty for local farmers.

While some view the September snowfall as a blessing for planting, others worry about the impact on their crops as climate change reshapes their agricultural landscape.

The district experienced a two-day snowfall from September 20 to 21, as predicted by the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS). This year’s snowfall contrasts sharply with the heavy rains of 2022 and the light snow of 2023.

For farmers like Mr. Khopolo Hlapi of the Letlapeng Resource Center, the moisture provides a welcome opportunity to plant maize earlier than usual. “We can not stop despite the weather conditions,” he says, clinging to hope for a fruitful harvest.
